The Atlanta Falcons host the Carolina Panthers in a NFL Week 1 rivalry game on Sunday. The Baltimore Ravens will kick off their quest for a Super Bowl championship at home in Week 1 against the Houston Texans. Kickoff from M&T Bank Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on CBS.

Baltimore drew a good card from the NFL’s schedule makers by receiving Houston to begin the season. The Texans are expected to be one of the worst teams in the league again as they begin their rebuild under new head coach DeMeco Ryans. 

Every major offseason storyline for the Ravens revolved around quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson entered free agency following the conclusion of the 2022 season, and his destination seemed cloudy. Jackson was trying to set the market for his position, which caused some tension between him and the organization as negotiations dragged on.

At the end of the day, Jackson got what he wanted. The former MVP re-signed with Baltimore for a five-year contract worth $260 million, making him the highest-paid player in league history. 

The Ravens’ new offensive coordinator Todd Monken will look to use every ounce of Jackson’s athleticism to find success in 2023. Baltimore also beefed up its receiving corps by signing Odell Beckham Jr. in free agency and drafting Zay Flowers from Boston College, giving Jackson more weapons to work with and reducing the team’s reliance on the ground game.

The Ravens’ defense will try to stop rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud in the season opener. Houston selected Stroud with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ohio State and is hoping he can be the quarterback of the future.

Assuming he wins the starting job and is healthy enough to suit up, this will be Stroud’s first career NFL start.

Moneyline: Texans vs. Ravens Week 1

Baltimore is a heavy moneyline favorite in this matchup for a reason. The Ravens are stronger than the Texans in nearly every facet of the game and have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. They are the superior team and also have home-field advantage.

Baltimore has -485 odds to win outright on DraftKings Sportsbook, which means a bettor must risk $485 to win $100. That isn’t worth it, especially in Week 1 when there are still unknowns on both sides.

With a new head coach and a new quarterback, Houston is a major wild card in this matchup. The Texans’ lack of experience will likely show against the battle-tested Ravens, who have won a Super Bowl under John Harbaugh and are coming off four playoff appearances in their last five seasons.

If you want to bet a straight moneyline and have the money for a worthy payout, take Baltimore at -485, although this bet would be better used as a leg in a parlay rather than as a straight bet.

Spread: Texans vs. Ravens

Because the moneyline market is so juiced, there is more value to be had on the spread. The spread in favor of the Ravens may seem like a difficult number to lay, though, because it requires Baltimore to win by two scores.

Baltimore is poised to have its best offense in years following its offseason upgrades. The Ravens are usually a strong defensive team as well, giving up the third-fewest points and ninth-fewest yards per game last season.

Houston, on the other hand, is abysmal on both sides of the ball. The Texans ranked 30th out of 32 in points scored last year and 27th in points allowed, so they’ll have a hard time keeping up with Baltimore. They also lost seven games by double digits last year, so they’re no stranger to lopsided defeats. 

Houston has much to prove before it can be trusted in the betting markets, even as a large underdog against the spread.

Over/Under Total: Texans vs. Ravens

The Over/Under is set at 44 points, which is essentially a standard total in the NFL. The Under tends to be a theme early in the season as it typically takes offenses longer to develop than defenses. 

Jackson and co. shouldn’t have much trouble scoring against the Texans’ shaky defense, but we don’t believe Houston will score a lot of points after averaging just 17.0 per game last year. Stroud will likely make a few costly mistakes as well that will leave points on the board for the offensively-challenged Texans.

Accordingly, our favorite play for this matchup is under 44 points.

The path to the Super Bowl is the same for every team: finish with one of the seven best records in the conference, win a few playoff games and then take down the champion of the opposite conference. 

While all 32 teams share the same roadmap, the terrain in front of them looks significantly different depending on their NFL regular-season schedule. Two of the not-so-lucky teams are the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns, who play in what is shaping up to be the toughest division in football, the AFC North. 

The in-state rivals start their 2023 campaigns with a crucial showdown in Cleveland.

As we continue, we will preview how the top betting markets are shaping up ahead of kick-off and analyze the best bets.

Moneyline: Bengals vs. Browns Week 1

The Bengals have firmly cemented themselves in the top tier of AFC teams poised to challenge the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

They made it as far as the AFC Championship Game last year, where they fell to the Chiefs on a last-second field goal, and have secured top-two finishes in the conference in the last two seasons.

The Browns did not find as much success as Cincy last year. They wrapped up their year with a 7-10 record and did not qualify for the postseason.

Cleveland was doomed to a losing record by an offense and defense that both finished in the bottom half of the league in scoring. The franchise also did not receive an immediate return on its $230 million investment in Deshaun Watson, who looked mediocre at best and awful at worst after his suspension ended. 

The Bengals are expected to find more success than the Browns in 2023, both because of their recent performances but also because of their overall roster composition. 

They have a consensus top-three quarterback in the league in Joe Burrow, elite playmakers, and a defense that’s quietly amongst the NFL’s best. Last season, Cincy improved to 11th in defensive DVOA (per footballoutsiders.com), up eight spots from the year prior. 

Meanwhile, Cleveland holds individual talents and hope rather than proof of concept.

That said, Week 1 will still be a tough challenge for the Bengals, who are slight road favorites. Burrow threw for 338 yards on 53 pass attempts with two touchdowns and four interceptions in Week 1 last year in a game that Cincy lost in overtime to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Browns have also dominated the rivalry as of late, winning five straight games against Cincy until their second meeting last season, a 23-10 home win for the Bengals.

Offenses tend to start the year behind defenses, but that will be less of a problem for Cleveland, which can pound the rock relentlessly with Nick Chubb behind a stellar offensive line. In the last two seasons, head coach Kevin Stefanski’s side ranked sixth or better in rush offense DVOA. 

Don’t be surprised to see uncharacteristic mistakes and several stagnant drives, but keep faith in the Bengals to win the game. Even if their high-powered offense abandons them, they gave up the fifth-fewest points in football in 2022 and can make life tough for the Browns.

Points Spread: Bengals vs. Browns

The spread for the impending Week 1 clash is 2.5 points with Cincinnati favored. 

While the spread always represents the greater risk (for favorites), the 2.5 number does not cross significant numbers such as three, six and seven, which are common point differentials. In other words, the Bengals are mostly set up to cover if they win because of how the game is scored, as they only need to win by a field goal.

One key matchup will be how Cleveland’s pass defense deals with Cincinnati’s receivers, namely Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd.

The Browns rolled out one of the stingiest secondaries in the league in 2022, ranking 16th in pass defense DVOA. Although they still ranked well in yards against (fifth-fewest in football), Denzel Ward struggled noticeably after returning from a foot injury.

The Bengals will have their hands full in the trenches. On one side, they have to block Defensive Player of the Year candidate Myles Garrett, and on the other, they have to slow down Chubb, who was third in rushing and averaged 5.1 yards per carry last year. 

Keep an eye on those subplots, but be prepared for Cincinnati to cover the spread.

Over/Under Total: Bengals vs. Browns

The Over/Under of 47.5 total points is among the highest totals for the weekend. If the Over cashes, it will likely be because the Bengals had their way with the Browns’ defense. 

For that reason, Cleveland fans will likely be looking at the Under in anticipation of a strong defensive outing.

However, our favorite play in this market is the Over. In five career games against the Browns, Burrow has averaged 295 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Even though his success has not directly translated to wins, it has led to many points scored on both sides.

We expect Cleveland to find success running the ball with Chubb, but we also trust Burrow to kick-start another MVP-caliber campaign with a strong outing.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers begin their quest for a third straight NFC South title on Sunday, September 10 with a road game against the Minnesota Vikings. It is a matchup between two defending division champs, as the Vikings secured the NFC North with a 13-4 record in 2022. Both teams, however, made a quick exit from the playoffs with a loss to a Wild Card team from the NFC East, with the Bucs falling to the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota losing to the New York Giants. As such, both teams begin the 2023 campaign with a sense of unfinished business.

The Buccaneers also are making something of a fresh start, having brought in a new offensive coaching staff and overall scheme, directed by coordinator Dave Canales, as well as a new starting quarterback in the wake of Tom Brady's retirement. Having won a very tight preseason competition with Kyle Trask for that assignment, Baker Mayfield will be making his Buccaneer debut on Sunday. Mayfield, the first overall pick in the 2018 draft by the Cleveland Browns, is looking to kick his career back into high gear after a 2022 season split between the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams.

Opposing that new-look Bucs offense will be a Minnesota defense that is also under new leadership. After finishing 31st in total defense last year, the Vikings replaced coordinator Ed Donatell with former Miami Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores, who typically takes a very aggressive approach to defensive play-calling, including a heavy dose of blitzes. The Vikings also were active on that side of the ball in free agency, adding edge rusher Marcus Davenport, down lineman Dean Lowry and cornerback Byron Murphy.

Tampa Bay's defense still contains much of the proven talent that helped the team make three straight playoff appearances and blast its way to the Super Bowl LV title in 2020. That includes Pro Bowlers on all three levels: defensive lineman Vita Vea, outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett, linebackers Lavonte David and Devin White and safety Antoine Winfield. The Buccaneers also managed to retain standout corners Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean over the last two offseasons despite the threat of free agency. The Bucs finished ninth in the NFL in total defense last year and have designs on an even higher ranking in 2023. They also hope that the addition of explosive first-round defensive lineman Calijah Kancey will jump start their entire pass-rush, though Kancey missed much of training camp with a calf injury and is something of a question mark for Sunday's opener.

That defense will get an early test from a Kirk Cousins-led Vikings offense that ranked eighth in the league in points scored a year ago and was very prolific through the air, averaging 263.8 yards per game. Cousins gets a tremendous amount of help from fourth-year wide receiver Justin Jefferson, whose 4,825 receiving yards are the most in NFL history for a player in his first three seasons. Jefferson's former running mate, Adam Thielen, is now in Carolina but the Vikings moved quickly to replace him with an other talented option, using a first-round draft pick on USC's Jordan Addison. The Minnesota passing attack also got a boost midway through last season with the trade for former Lions tight end T.J. Hockenson. Hockenson had 60 catches and 519 yards in just 10 games with the Vikings. There's also a new lead back in the backfield, as the team cut ties with long-time standout Dalvin Cook and gave the starting job to Alexander Mattison.

The oddsmakers have the Buccaneers as heavy underdogs in their road opener, and national power ranking polls suggest there are low expectations for the 2023 Bucs as they move on from the Brady era. Meanwhile, the Vikings generated doubts about their ability to sustain last season's winning percentage given that they finished the season with a negative points differential and were an incredible 11-0 in one-score games. As such, Sunday's game pits two teams that are determined to prove their doubters wrong and are seeking a big boost in those efforts with a Week One victory.

ALL-TIME HEAD-TO-HEAD SERIES

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have played the Minnesota Vikings 55 times overly nearly 50 years, but the Buccaneers have definitely enjoyed the last quarter century of the rivalry a lot more than the first two decades.

Overall, Minnesota owns a 33-23 edge in the head-to-head series with Tampa Bay, but the momentum may have swung when Tony Dungy left the Vikings to take over the Bucs' head coaching job in 1996. Dungy's first victory at the helm was memorably over the Vikings, and beginning with that contest Tampa Bay has won 12 of the last 20 meetings between the two teams. That included a six-game winning streak from 2001– the year before Tampa Bay left Minnesota and the old NFC Central behind to join the new NFC South – to 2012. The Vikings briefly reasserted control with wins in 2014 and 2017 but the Buccaneers won the most recent meeting, a 26-14 decision in Tampa. Tom Brady gave the Buccaneers an early lead with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Scotty Miller, then extended it with a scoring strike to Rob Gronkowski, while Tampa Bay's defense sacked Kirk Cousins six times, twice by Shaquil Barrett. That outcome began an eight-game winning streak for the Buccaneers that extended through Super Bowl LV.

Since the 2002 realignment that put the Buccaneers in a new division, Tampa Bay and Minnesota have essentially only met every three years as part of the usual rotating divisional matchups, which means they have almost never finished in the same spots in their respective divisions in the same year. The Bucs and Vikings did both win their respective divisions last year, but the NFC North and South were already scheduled to play each other in 2023. The exception was an extra game in 2012 that the Buccaneers won, 36-17, powered by rookie running back Doug Martin's first 100-yard game and three Josh Freeman touchdown passes.

Minnesota's most recent win in the series came in 2017 as Case Keenum threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Stefon Diggs. Dalvin Cook, then a rookie playing in just his second game, ran for 97 yards and a score as the Vikings pulled away for a 34-17 victory. The Buccaneers' aforementioned six-game winning streak included a number of high-scoring affairs, including decisions by scores of 41-14, 38-24 and 36-17.

The Buccaneers have played the Vikings even in Tampa, with each team winning 14 times. The Vikings had taken a one-game lead in that category in 2014 with a 19-13 decision in Tampa in 2014, an overtime game that lasted all of one play in the extra period. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins fumbled after a 10-yard catch and Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr returned it 27 yards for the game-winning score. In an odd note, however, the Bucs have more overtime wins over Minnesota than any other team in their history, owning a 3-2 mark in such games. All three of the Bucs' overtime wins over Minnesota occurred between 1990 and 1996.

The Pittsburgh Steelers open the 2023 NFL regular season with one of the toughest matchups in the league against the San Francisco 49ers.

Mike Tomlin's team does have the benefit of playing Sunday's contest at home, and it may help it that Brock Purdy will be making his first start since the elbow injury he suffered in the NFC Championship Game.

Even if Purdy is not at his best, the Steelers still have to deal with Christian McCaffrey in both facets of the offense.

T.J. Watt and the Steelers defense need to find a way to contain McCaffrey, whether it is loading the box to stop the run or smothering him out of the backfield, to put Kenny Pickett and Co. in a good spot to win the game.

Pickett comes into his second season with an improved set of offensive weapons. The additions of Allen Robinson and Darnell Washington could help the Steelers move the ball with ease against the reigning NFC West champion.

McCaffrey has had mixed results in season openers during his NFL career.

The 49ers running back was held to 50 rushing yards or fewer in three of his six Week 1 games. He was held under 50 receiving yards in each of those three contests as well.
